He married Margaret Isabella Balfour. Margaret was born 1829. Margaret was the daughter of Lewis Balfour and Henrietta Scott Smith. Margaret died 1897 at 68 years of age.

Thomas Stevenson and Margaret Isabella Balfour had the following child:

2 i. Robert Louis² Stevenson was born in 8 Howard Place, Edinburgh 13/11/1850. Robert died 4/12/1894 at 44 years of age. He married Fanny Van de Grift 19/05/1880. Fanny was born in Indiana. Fanny was the daughter of Jacob Van de Grift and Esther Keen. Originally christened Robert Lewis Stevenson, but adopted the form of 'Louis' at about the age of eighteen. On May 19, 1880 Stevenson married Mrs. Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne (born circa 1860). She was divorced from her husband Samuel Osbourne just before her second marriage.
