He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Borstal Road, St. Margarets, Rochester, Kent. He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Royal Marine Barracks, Forton, Alverstoke, Hampshire. John was visiting in 96 Addison Road, Kensington, London.1891. He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in 26 Jevington Gardens, Eastbourne, Sussex.
