He married Louisa Balfour 1805. Louisa was born in Edinburgh 13/12/1779. Louisa was the daughter of John Balfour 3rd Laird of Pilrig and Jean Whytt. Louisa died April 1859 at 79 years of age. She was christened in Edinburgh, 18/12/1779.

James Mackenzie and Louisa Balfour had the following children:
