Third Generation

8. Penniston3 Hastings (Penniston2, Penyston1) was born in Guiting Power, Gloucester 27 February 1704.

He married Hester Warren in Twyning, Cambridge, 30 July 1730. Hester died 15 December 1732.

Story of Churchill: His son, Penniston, was up at Balliol by 1724. He did not take a degree, but took Orders. On July 30th, 1730, he married Hester Warren, of Stubbs Hill, Twyning, Glos., and they continued to live at Churchill with the father. Four months after his marriage he was appointed to the living of Bledington, which he held until 1738. This was probably due to the influence of the Leighs, who were neighbours of the Hastings and held the manor of Bledington. Bledington is the next Parish to Churchill, but is just over the borders of Gloucestershire. It was, therefore, quite easy for him to continue living at Churchill, while he carried out his duties at Bledington. They first had a daughter and then on December 6th, 1732, their second child, Warren Hastings, was born-unfortunately the mother died within a day or two of his birth. In the Churchill Register appears-" 1732. Dec. 15th. Warren, son of the Rev. Mr. Penniston Hastings, was baptised." His mother, whose name he was given, was buried rather strange to say on the same day at Daylesford.

Macaulay: The second son, Pynaston, an idle worthless boy, married before he was sixteen {SA ..26}, lost his wife in two years, and died in the West Indies, leaving to the care of his unfortunate father a little orphan, destined to strange and memorable vicissitudes of fortune.

Only seven months after the death of his mother, his father was married, on July 18th, 1733, at Bicester, to Mary Dandridge, of Holywell, Oxford, the daughter of a small tradesman, and not long after he went to the West Indies and does not appear to have taken any interest in the upbringing of his two children, who were left in the care of their grandfather.
