Internet: Story of Churchill After the successive generations of Philip, Myles, Bartholomew, Roland, Thomas and John, comes John Hastings, the Cavalier, born 1612, who spent much of his substance in the cause of his King and at the close of the Civil War retired to live at St. Jean de Luz. On returning home he brought some seeds of the sainfoin and grew them for the first time in England at Daylesford (1650). One of the fields in Churchill Parish (as well as two in Daylesford Parish) is named "sainfoin ground". It was this John who married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Penystone, of Cornwell. Their son, the first Penystone Hastings, married Elizabeth, daughter of Samual Creswicke, of Moreton-in-the-Marsh. It was one of these Creswickes (Joseph) who later procured Warren Hasting's nomination in the East India Company.
