7. Sir John3 Holmes (Henry2, Robert1) was born 1640. John died 28/05/1683 in London, at 42 years of age. His body was interred 23/06/1683 in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight.

He married Margaret Lowther in St. Martins in the Fields, 06/04/1668. Margaret was born c1648. Margaret was the daughter of Sir William Lowther.

John was promoted in 1663 to Lieutenant. John was promoted in 1664 to Captain. John was knighted 1672. John was promoted in 1673 to Rear Admiral of the Blue. John was promoted on 14/04/1677 to Rear Admiral of the Fleet. John was promoted in 1678 to Rear Admiral of a detached force. Governor of Usk Castle. MP for Newtown, Isle of Wight 1677 - 1683.

Sir John Holmes and Margaret Lowther had the following children:

child 16 i. Elizabeth4 Holmes. Elizabeth died 14/01/1705. She married Sir Henry Hicks. Henry was the son of Sir William Hicks and Marthagnes Coninsgsby. Henry died 28/10/1755.

child 17 ii. John Holmes. In the Royal Navy. Died without issue.

By his will, Sir Robert Holmes desires that his nephew Henry should marry within 18 months his natural daughter Mary but should he refuse to do so then within 18 months from the expiration of the first named time that John his other nephew should do the same. The property is devised upon certain conditions to that effect. Mary married Henry.

child 18 iii. Robert Holmes was born in Carrisbrooke Castle, Isle of Wight circa 1672.

child 19 iv. Dorothy Holmes was born October 1681. She was baptized in Thorley, Isle of Wight, 24/10/1681.

child 20 v. Thomas Holmes was born October 1682. He was baptized in Thorley, Isle of Wight, 31/10/1682.
