29. John¹⁰ Elphinstone 4th Lord Balmerino (John⁹, John⁸, James⁷, Robert⁶, Alexander⁵, Alexander⁴, Sir John³, James², Sir Henry¹) was born in Edinburgh 26/12/1652. John died 13/05/1736 in Leith, Midlothian, at 83 years of age.

He married twice. He married Lady Christian Montgomery 16/02/1672. Christian was the daughter of Hugh Montgomery 7th Earl of Eglinton. He married Anne Ross 7/06/1687. Anne was the daughter of Arthur Ross. Anne died 1712.

One of Scotland's leading lawyers.

John Elphinstone 4th Lord Balmerino and Anne Ross had the following child:

33 ii. Arthur Elphinstone 6th Lord Balmerino was born 1688. Arthur died 18/08/1746 in Tower of London, at 58 years of age. He married Margaret Chalmers. Margaret was born 1710. Margaret was the daughter of Captain Chalmers. Margaret died 24/08/1765 in Restalrig, at 55 years of age. On 29 July 1746 he was charged with high treason. He had been active in the Jacobite risings of both 1715 (and that as a deserter) and 1745, and could expect little clemency from government. He was brought to trial with the earls of Kilmarnock and Cromarty at Westminster Hall. Was beheaded at the Tower of London.

Died without issue.
