14. James⁷ Elphinstone 1st Lord Balmerino (Robert⁶, Alexander⁵, Alexander⁴, Sir John³, James², Sir Henry¹) was born 19/08/1557. James died 21/06/1612 in Balmerino, Fife, Scotland, at 54 years of age.

He married twice. He married Sarah Menteith 21/03/1588. Sarah was the daughter of Sir John Menteith. He married Marjory Maxwell c1597. Marjory was the daughter of Hugh Maxwell. In 1609, a jury sentenced him to be beheaded, quartered, and attainted as a traitor, but the sentence was not carried out.

James Elphinstone 1st Lord Balmerino and Sarah Menteith had the following child:

+ 19 i. John⁸ Elphinstone 2nd Lord Balmerino.

James Elphinstone 1st Lord Balmerino and Marjory Maxwell had the following children:

20 ii. James Elphinstone. Created Lord Coupar in 1607.

21 iii. Margaret Elphinstone. She married Andrew Fraser 2nd Lord Fraser. Andrew was the son of Lord Fraser.

22 iv. Barbara Elphinstone. She married John Hamilton. i0 of Blair.

23 v. Marjory Elphinstone. She married Francis Fraser. Francis was the son of Lord Fraser.
