7. James6 Douglas 10th Earl of Morton (William5, Robert4, William3, Sir Robert2, Thomas1) was born 1615. James died 25/08/1686 at 71 years of age.

He married Anne Hay 10/02/1649. Anne was the daughter of James Hay 1st Baronet and Sidney Massey. Anne died 1700.

James was knighted on 23/09/1635 on board the Royal Ship 'Merhonneur'. Sir James inherited the Morton honors after the death of his nephew without heir. He married Anne Hay, daughter of Sir James Hay of Smithfield, and fathered 5 sons, three of which would inherit his titles. His eldest son, Charles, Lord Aberdour, drowned while at sea prior to his father's death on August 25th, 1686. The titles were passed down to Sir James' 2nd son, James.

On 23 September 1635 he was knighted by the Earl of Lindsay on board the Royal Ship 'Merhonneur'. He became a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to King Charles I; Commissioner of Supply for the counties Peebles and Fife. On 10 February he married Anne Hay.

In November 1683 a warrant was issued for 6,000 pounds sterling to be paid, 'for behoof and support of the family of Mortoun'. However, on 26 February 1685, Royal instructions were issued that no further payments be made to the Earl or his son until they had ratified the decree of 1669 renouncing all right to the Earldom and lordship of Orkney and Zetland.

In April 1685 he claimed precedence of the Earl of Crawford and other Earls. James Douglas, Earl of Morton, died 25 August 1686.

James Douglas 10th Earl of Morton and Anne Hay had the following children:

child 10 i. Charles7 Douglas Lord Aberdour. Charles died 25/08/1686. Charles, Lord Aberdour, drowned while at sea prior to his father's death on August 25th, 1686.

child 11 ii. James Douglas 11th Earl of Morton. James died 7/12/1715. James Acceded 1686. He was a member of the Privy Council of Queen Anne, and was one of the commissioners for the Union. He successfully won the repeal of the Act of 1669, thereby recovering the islands of Orkney and Zetland. James was unmarried when he died December 7, 1715 and the titles passed to his younger brother.

child 15 vi. Mary Douglas was born 1665. She was christened in Peebles, Scotland, 10/12/1665.
