90. Major General John16 Ashe (John Baptista15, John14, John13, John12, James11, John10, James9, Nicholas8, John7, William6, John5, Baldwin4, Richard3 Eshe, Henry2, Sir Oliver1 D'Esse) was born in Beaufort County, North Carolina 24/03/1725. John died 24/10/1781 in Duplin County, North Carolina, at 56 years of age.

He married Rebecca Moore 1741. Rebecca was the daughter of Maurice Moore. Justice of the Peace in 1751. Represented New Hanover county in the assembly from 31 March 1752 until 8 April 1775. Commanded troops at the battle of Briar Creek on 3 March 1779. Ashe's poorly supplied troops were surprised and defeated by an attack from the rear. Ashe sought a hearing and the court concluded that he had not taken the necessary precautions and was censured. In 1781 he was taken prisoner by the British. In prison he contracted smallpox and was released and died while making his way home to Hillsborough. He was buried in an unmarked grave.
