2. Sir James Crawford² Caffin (William¹) was born in Woolwich, Kent 1/03/1812. James died 24/05/1883 in Woodlawn, Vanbrugh Park Road, Blackheath, Kent, at 71 years of age.

He married Frances Brouncker Atfield 21/09/1843. Frances was born in Kingston, Isle of Wight c1820. Frances was the daughter of William Atfield. Frances died 1871 at 51 years of age. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Vanbrugh Lodge, Vanbrugh Fields, Greenwich, 1861.

James served in the military August 1824. James was promoted 7/03/1842 in Commander. He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in Vanbrugh Lodge, Vanbrugh Fields, Greenwich. From The Times, May 26, 1883

Admiral Sir James Crawford Caffin, K.C.B., died on Thursday, at his residence, Woodlawn, Blackheath, Kent, aged 71. He was the third son of the late Mr. William Caffin, of Blackheath, and of the Royal Laboratory, Woolwich, by his marriage with Bethia, daughter of the late Mr. George Crawford, adjutant R.A., and was born in 1812. He entered the Navy as a first-class volunteer on board Pylades, and in 1827 became midshipman of the Cambrian, in which vessel he was present at the battle of Navarinn, and he was afterwards wrecked in that frigate while in engaged with pirates at Grabusa. He was promoted to a lieutenancy in 1838, became a commander in 1842, captain in 1847, and served on board the Penelope in the Baltic in 1854, taking part in the bombardment of Bomarsund. In 1855 he commanded the Hastings at the bombardment of Sweaborg. In the same year he was appointed Naval Director-General of Artillery and Vice-President of the Ordnance Select Committee at the War Office. From 1858 to 1868 he held the post of Director of Stores in the War Department. The gallant officer was appointed a naval aide-de-camp to the Queen in 1863, and in 1865 he was promoted to the rank of rear-admiral. He became a vice-admiral in 1871 and an admiral in 1877. He was nominated a Companion of the Order of the Bath (Military Division) in 1854, and on his retirement was promoted to a Knight Commandership of that Order. Admiral Caffin was the author of a work on "Naval Gunnery". He was a magistrate for Kent, and married, in 1843, Frances Brouncker, youngest daughter of Mr. William Atfield, of Cosham-house, Hants, but was a left a widower in 1871.

Change of Name - I, Crawford Caffin of Her Majesty's Coastguard, King's Lynn, in the County of Norfolk, a Commander in Her Majesty's Royal Navy, hereby give notice, that by a Deed Poll, bearing the day of March, 1889, and enrolled in the Chancery Division of Her Majesty's High Court of Jusice on the 28 th day of the same month of March, I have ASSUMED and ADOPTED the SURNAME of CRAWFORD jointly with and in addition to my present surname of Caffin. And that at all times hereafter the joint surname of Crawford-Caffin will be used by me in all deeds and writings, and on all occasions whatsoever. Dated this 25th day of April, 1889. 6 iv. Annie Bethia Caffin was born in Spring Vale, Isle of Wight c1850. She married John MacGregor. John died 16/07/1892.

7 v. Emily Burns Caffin was born in Ayrshire, Scotland c1852. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Vanbrugh Lodge, Vanbrugh Fields, Greenwich, 1861.

8 vi. Bertha Alice Caffin was born in Spring Vale, Isle of Wight 1853. Bertha died 2/03/1929 in 6 Manor Grove, Beckenham, Kent, at 75 years of age. Her body was interred 14/03/1929 in Elmers End. She married Lieutenant Colonel Wilmot Brooke 1885. Wilmot was the son of William Brooke and Emily Margaret Wilmot.

She was listed as a resident in the census report in Vanbrugh Lodge, Vanbrugh Fields, Greenwich, 1861.

9 vii. Agnes M. Caffin was born in Southsea, Hampshire c1855. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Vanbrugh Lodge, Vanbrugh Fields, Greenwich, 1861.
