He married three times. He married Margaret Buchanan. Margaret was the daughter of Moses Buchanan. He married Jean Gray. From the marriage between Thomas Buchcanan and Jean Gray, the Gray-Buchanans are descended.
He married Helen Graham 28/11/1774. Helen was born 1756. Helen was the daughter of William Graham and Helen Crawford. Helen died 1812 at 56 years of age. Helen signed a marriage settlement with an unknown person 25/11/1774. Given to Strathclyde Archive in 1983.

John Balfour in Glasgow, Scotland, 6/07/1810. John was born in Edinburgh 4/4/1776. John was the son of
John Balfour 3rd Laird of Pilrig and Jean Whytt. John died December 1859 at 83 years of age. His body was interred
1859 in Rosebank Cemetary, Edinburgh. He was christened in Edinburgh, 26/4/1776. He was listed as head of
household in the 1841 census in Pilrig Street, Edinburgh. He was listed as head of household in the 1851 census in Waterloo
