3. John2 Arbuthnot (Alexander1) was born 1667. John died 27/02/1735 in Cork Street, Piccadilly, London, at 67 years of age. His body was interred 4/03/1735 in St. James's, Piccadilly.

He was baptized in Arbuthnott, Kincardinshire, 29/04/1667. Religion: religion unknown. Found birthdate as 1728 in Graham Balfour Diary. Gone with birthdate found in DNB.

Educated Marischal College, Aberdeen. Became a private tutor of Mathematics and accompianed his pupil to University College, Oxford where he studied medicine privately. To practise creditably as a physician in London, it was necessary to gain a licence from Cambridge or Oxford (available only to their MAs), or a university doctorate in medicine. Arbuthnot presented himself at the University of St Andrews, which like Oxford did not teach medicine, but from this time also granted the doctorate; enrolled as a student of medicine; and on the same day successfully defended seven theses ‘De secretione animalium’ (titles printed by George Mosman, 1696), and graduated MD.

John Arbuthnot had the following children:

child 8 ii. Anne Arbuthnot. Anne died 1751. Died unmarried.

child 9 iii. Margaret Arbuthnot. Margaret died 1740. Died unmarried.

child 10 iv. Charles Arbuthnot was born c1705. Charles died 1731 at 26 years of age. Died unmarried.
