143. Leslie Melville12 Balfour-Melville (James11, James10 Balfour, John9, Professor James8, James7, James6, James5, Andrew4, James3, David2, Alexander1) was born in Edinburgh 9/03/1854. Leslie died 16/07/1937 in 35 Westgate, North Berwick, at 83 years of age.
He married twice. He married Jeanie Amelia Wilson 29/11/1879. Jeanie was the daughter of Doctor William Wilson. Jeanie died 1890. He married Harriet Maud Carey 1923. Harriet died 1965. Died without issue.
Educated at Edinburgh Academy (1865 -1871) where he captained the football fifteen, but made his mark in cricket. While studying law at Edinburgh University (1871 - 1875) he was an enthusiastic rugby player. Sport was his main enjoyment and he represented Scotland at Rugby Football in 1872. He was also outstanding in Tennis, Golf and Cricket. Member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, St. Andrews in 1873. In 1879 he became Scottish lawn tennis champion. In 1894 he became a Writer to the Signet and joined his father and brother in the firm of Balfour & Scott.
According to DNB Leslie assumed the name Melville in 1883, from John Whyte-Melville.

born in Edinburgh 9/07/1882. James died 25/09/1915 in Loos, France, at 33 years of age. James joined the 3rd
Black Watch Regiment on 3/11/1914. Educated at Malvern and Oriel College, Oxford. Changed his name from James Elliot Balfour in 1893.
When war broke out he received a commission as Second Lieutenant 3rd Bn. attd. 2nd Bn., Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) and distinguished
himself at Loos by leading his men to the furthest point reached by the regiment in 1915. He fell at Loos in the fifth line of the German
trenches.
