He married Frances Charlotte Henty in Hawthorne Church, nr Melbourne, 19/04/1859. Frances was the daughter of James Henty.

He was christened in Edinburgh, 16/06/1830. He was listed as a resident in the census report in Pilrig Street, Edinburgh, 1841. Had six sons and five daughters.

James Balfour and Frances Charlotte Henty had the following child:
