54. John⁸ Balfour (James⁷, James⁶, James⁵, Andrew⁴, James³, David², Alexander¹) was born Riddle's Close, Leith 1/12/1715. John died 16/10/1795 in Millbank House, Leith, at 79 years of age.

He married Catherine Cant 4/01/1747. Catherine was the daughter of Ludovick Cant. Catherine died 1802.

He was christened in South Leith, Scotland, 4/12/1715. Educated Edinburgh University, matriculated 1730. Bookseller and printer. In 1773, he bought the lease of Bogsmill, now Redhall Paper Mill, from Robert Hamilton. Millbank became the family's summer home. Had five sons and one daughter.

John Balfour and Catherine Cant had the following children:

74 vi. William Balfour was born in Edinburgh 6/10/1759.
