29. James⁶ Balfour (James⁵, Andrew⁴, James³, David², Alexander¹) was born in Edinburgh 1652. James died c1702 at 50 years of age.

He married Helen Smith in Edinburgh, 1679. Helen was born in Edinburgh 1659. Helen was the daughter of Robert Smith and Elizabeth Hope. Helen died c1732 at 73 years of age. She was christened in Edinburgh, 27/02/1659.

A merchant, he engaged in various enterprises. He had soap-works, glass-works, and an alum factory in Leith. Governor of the Darien Company. Died of some sort of fever.

James Balfour and Helen Smith had the following children:

35 i. Mary⁷ Balfour was born 1680.

James Balfour of Pilrig

+ 36 ii. James Balfour 1st Laird of Pilrig was born 1681.

37 iii. Robert Balfour was born 1682.

+ 38 iv. John Balfour was born 1684.

39 v. Elizabeth Balfour was born 1685.

40 vi. Helen Balfour was born 1688. She married Andrew Duncan 1708. (See Andrew Duncan for the continuation of this line.)

41 vii. Alexander Balfour was born 1690. Alexander died 05/02/1737 at 46 years of age. His body was interred 06/02/1737. Died of some sort of fever two days after his father died of the same.

42 viii. William Balfour was born 1692.

43 ix. Bridget Balfour was born 1694. Bridget died 23/11/1764 at 69 years of age. She married Neil Mac Vicar 1737. Neil died 1747.

44 x. Elizabeth Balfour was born 1695.

45 xi. Henry Balfour was born 1698.
