James Balfour of Pilrig

36. James⁷ Balfour 1st Laird of Pilrig (James⁶, James⁵, Andrew⁴, James³, David², Alexander¹) was born 1681. James died 3/02/1737 at 55 years of age. His body was interred 4/02/1737.

He married Louisa Hamilton c1704. Louisa was born 1686. Louisa was the daughter of Sir Robert Hamilton and Louisa Cochrane. Louisa died 1750 at 64 years of age.

Bought Pilrig House in 1718. According to Vital Records Index, he had six children. Bridget 1648, Helen 1650, Andrew 1658, Jonet (f) 1660, Robert 1665, Chrystine 1666.

He was christened in South Leith, Scotland, 28/11/1706. Merchant in Leith.

48 iii. William Balfour was born Riddle's Close, Leith 14/1/1708. William died 1708 Riddle's Close, Leith, at less than one year of age. He was christened in South Leith, Scotland, 27/1/1708.

Helen Balfour wife of Gavin Hamilton 1709 - 1793

49 iv. Helen Balfour was born Riddle's Close, Leith 30/8/1709. Helen died August 1793 at 83 years of age. She married Gavin Hamilton 26/03/1732. Gavin was born in Cramond, Edinburgh 11/02/1704. Gavin was the son of Reverend William Hamilton and Mary Robertson. Gavin died 1/01/1767 in Millbank House, Leith, at 62 years of age. His body was interred 7/01/1767 in Colinton Kirk, Colinton. 50 v. George Balfour was born Riddle's Close, Leith 1/07/1711. George died 28/03/1751 at 40 years of age. He married Miss Stevenson.

He was christened in South Leith, Scotland, 3/07/1711. Twinned with John. Had two sons and three daughters.

51 vi. John Balfour was born Riddle's Close, Leith 1/07/1711. John died 1711 Riddle's Close, Leith, at less than one year of age. He was christened in South Leith, Scotland, 3/07/1711. Twinned with George.

52 vii. Alexander Balfour was born Riddle's Close, Leith 23/03/1713. He was christened in South Leith, Scotland, 27/03/1713.

53 viii. Elizabeth Balfour was born Riddle's Close, Leith 2/04/1714. She married Mr. Wodrow 15/06/1755.

She was christened in South Leith, Scotland, 6/04/1714.

+ 54 ix. John Balfour was born 1/12/1715.

55 x. William Balfour was born Riddle's Close, Leith 30/11/1716. William died 1717 Riddle's Close, Leith, at less than one year of age. He was christened in South Leith, Scotland, 2/12/1716.

Louisa Balfour, wife of Dr. Robert Whytt of Bennochy

56 xi. Louisa Balfour was born Pilrig House, Edinburgh c1718. Louisa died 1764 at 46 years of age. She married Dr. Robert Whytt 1743. Robert was born 1714. Robert was the son of Robert Whytt and Jean Murray. Robert died 1766 at 52 years of age. (See Dr. Robert Whytt for the continuation of this line.)

57 xii. Bridget Balfour was born Pilrig House, Edinburgh 3/07/1720. She married Reverend William Leechman c1743. i0 He was minister of Beith, in Ayrshire, and afterwards Doctor and Professor of Divinity in Glasgow University, and ultimately became Principal. Married in 1743.

58 xiii. Margaret Balfour was born Pilrig House, Edinburgh 3/07/1720.

59 xiv. Mary Balfour was born Pilrig House, Edinburgh 12/09/1721. Mary died 1722 Pilrig House, Edinburgh, at less than one year of age.

60 xv. William Balfour was born Pilrig House, Edinburgh 26/07/1723. William died 1731 Pilrig House, Edinburgh, at 7 years of age.

+ 61 xvi. Major Henry Balfour was born 13/08/1724.

62 xvii. Unnamed Balfour was born Pilrig House, Edinburgh 1726. Unnamed died 1726 Pilrig House, Edinburgh, at less than one year of age.
