66. John⁹ Balfour 3rd Laird of Pilrig (Professor James⁸, James⁷, James⁶, James⁵, Andrew⁴, James³, David², Alexander¹) was born Pilrig House, Edinburgh 1740. John died 17/02/1814 at 74 years of age.

He married Jean Whytt 26/01/1773. Jean was born 1750. Jean was the daughter of Dr. Robert Whytt and Louisa Balfour. Jean died 20/11/1833 at 83 years of age.

Buried in the Parish Church of South Leith.

John Balfour 3rd Laird of Pilrig and Jean Whytt had the following children:

+ 77 i. James¹⁰ Balfour was born 07/01/1774.

78 ii. Robert Balfour was born 1774. Robert died 13/11/1782 at 7 years of age.

+ 79 iii. John Balfour was born 4/4/1776.

+ 80 iv. Lewis Balfour was born 30/4/1777.

81 v. Louisa Balfour was born in Edinburgh 13/12/1779. Louisa died April 1859 at 79 years of age. She married James Mackenzie 1805. (See James Mackenzie for the continuation of this line.)

She was christened in Edinburgh, 18/12/1779.

82 vi. Melville Balfour was born in St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Scotland 8/2/1781. He married Joanna Brunton. Lost a leg after falling from an apple tree. Became a wine merchant.
